A survey of psychotherapy literature revealed the following recovery rates:
- Psychoanalysis: 38% after 600 sessions
- Behavior Therapy: 72% after 22 sessions
- Hypnotherapy: 93% after 6 sessions
- Alfred A. Barrios, Ph.D., as reported in the Psychotherapy Journal (Volume 7, Number 1) of the American Psychiatric Association
Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy can be even more effective. Major Jeffrey Scott Yarvis, Ph.D., LCSW, BCD (Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Social Work) conducted a study on the effectiveness of various modalities with Iraq war veterans who had Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Major Yarvis compared Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy (HCH) with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Critical Incidence Stress Debriefing (CISD). CBT and CISD (in which the exposed individual talks about her or his feelings and reactions to the critical incident) have traditionally been used by the military in the treatment of PTSD.
The study used the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist - Military Version (PCL-M) to evaluate pre- and post-test symptoms. Post-test mean scores are shown below (n = 10 in each group):
- Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy: 10.6
- Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: 13.7
- Critical Incidence Stress Debriefing: 14.7
